Leeds Skip Hire

What can & can't go in a skip?

Knowing what's allowed keeps your hire simple, safe and surprise-free. Here's a clear rundown of what you can load, what needs declaring, and what we can't take.

Acceptable waste

Anything that isn't hazardous to people or the environment is generally fine to go in. The list below isn't exhaustive, but it gives you a good idea.

General household & domestic waste
Garden waste (soil, grass, hedge trimmings)
Wood, MDF, plywood & timber
Soil, rubble, bricks & dried mortar
Tiles, ceramics & glass
Metals & scrap
Cardboard, paper & polystyrene
Furniture, beds & mattresses
Carpets & rugs
Plastic, food packaging & bottles
Dried paint tins (empty)
Non-electrical fittings

Controlled waste — please declare

These items can go in a skip, but they need handling carefully. Just let us know when you book so we can plan ahead.

Plasterboard & gypsum

Accepted, but must be kept separate from general waste — usually in its own skip. Let us know when you book.

Upholstered furniture (POPs)

Sofas, armchairs and similar are controlled waste and must be declared when ordering.

Mattresses

Accepted, but please tell us when booking so we can plan the load.

Prohibited waste

These items cannot go in a skip. They're hazardous or need specialist processing, and the hirer is legally responsible for a skip's contents — so please keep them out unless we've agreed it beforehand.

Asbestos or asbestos-containing materials
TVs, monitors & cathode ray tubes
Fridges, freezers & large electricals (WEEE)
Any item with a plug or wire
Batteries (car, household or industrial)
Tyres
Gas cylinders & pressurised containers
Fluorescent light bulbs & tubes
Solvents, fuels, oils & liquid paint
Clinical or medical waste

The 16-yard Jumbo is light waste only

Our Jumbo Skip is built for large volumes of light waste. Heavy materials like rubble, bricks, soil, concrete and tiles must not go in it. For heavy construction waste, the 8-yard Maxi Skip is the one you want.

Common questions

What can I put in a skip?+
Skips are for inert, soil, garden waste, paper, plastics, wood, old household furniture and other non-hazardous waste. If you're ever unsure about a particular item, give us a ring on 0113 347 7330 and we'll happily clarify.
What can't I put in a skip?+
You can't put in fridges and freezers, fluorescent and sodium lamps, gas cylinders, tyres, solvent or paint cans, clinical and medical waste, liquids, oils, asbestos or any hazardous waste. These items are prohibited unless pre-arranged when you place your order.
Can I put soil and rubble in a skip?+
Yes — soil, rubble, bricks and concrete can go in our 2, 4 and 8-yard skips. The one exception is the 16-yard Jumbo Skip, which is for light waste only with no heavy materials.
How full can the skip be?+
Skips must be level loaded — waste must not go above the top edge. It's illegal to overfill a skip and our driver may not be able to collect an overloaded one, as it's a risk to the public. If you think you'll have more than the skip can hold, it's worth going up a size.
